Since it first opened its doors in 1888, Hotel Catullo on the shore of Sirmione has been frequented by celebrities and royals alike and has become a staple of Lake Garda's history. It has garnered fame not simply through its longevity but through its reputation for stellar service and family hospitality courtesy of Fabio and his wonderful team. The Catullo is a wonderful mix of new and old world decor with classically designed rooms, each different from the next and featuring antique painted furniture yet with all the modern amenities you could want during your stay. Various antiques line the hallways and reception areas with the likes of a Vesper, dog statues to honour the family dog and vintage magnums of wine darted about the windowsills, though sadly, these are empty! The warm peach tones of the buildings' exterior protrude out onto the waterfront with verdant gardens you would perhaps be surprised to see in the centre of a town as well as a private lakeside promenade with sun loungers and parasols for those who want to take a slower pace and enjoy the sunshine before taking a dip in the lake.
The onsite restaurant is spacious and airy with French doors opening out into the garden where in the warmer summer months dinner can be taken under the grapevines. The vines are woven through the overhead trellis' and come to life as the sunsets when they are lit romantically with lanterns and fairy lights. The gardens are designed with ancient Rome in mind and the result is a beautiful and verdant manicured garden. As well as superb cuisine made fresh with local ingredients each day, there is a fantastic wine list here chosen by the family each year with grapes from near and far offering more than ample choice.
Once a week, the hotel organizes a party for guests in the oppulent gardens including live music and the chance to enjoy the incredible views with a glass of Aperol to hand.
With the ferry port just a short walk from the hotel, getting out to other resorts is incredibly easy, whether you want to spend the neighbouring resort of Peschiera or the medieval northernmost point of Riva. The town itself is bursting with culture, pottery cafes, bakeries and delicatessens selling locally produced olive oil, wines and of course gelato.
Whilst the hotel Catullo does not have a pool, they are in close proximity to some of the best beaches on the lake including Sirmione Beach known for its quiet surroundings and the stunning Parco Baia delle Sirene in the resort of Garda which is just a short ferry ride away.
